Marie O'Connell

Serious about fitness

Physiotherapy, (University College Dublin School of Physiotherapy), 2008

Marie has thirteen years experience as a general physiotherapist. After two years of study through AUT, and almost 2,000 hours of supervised practical work, Marie became a registered hand therapist in 2024. She works from our Royston Centre clinic in Hastings.

While all our physios have a good understanding of hand biomechanics and injury treatment, this professional development gives Marie a set of skills particular to hand and lower arm issues such as occupational overuse, RSI, carpal tunnel, fractures, tendon damage, crush injuries and lacerations.

While serious hand trauma is usually first seen at a hospital, physiotherapy is often required as part of the recovery and rehabilitation process post treatment or post surgery.

In some cases, the hand is immobilised with a splint or brace to allow musculature, tendons and fascia to heal. In other cases, supported movement is encouraged to re-build muscle strength after an extended period of inactivity - after a cast has been removed for example.

Splinting requires a clinician’s knowledge and a sculptor’s skill, to form breathable thermoplastics into rigid supports and restraints which hold the hand in an optimal position for recovery. Semi-rigid braces are also used to provide supported movement.

Marie is a keen sportswoman who has participated in many local and national sports events, including the 2019 Coast to Coast Challenge
